i think it all comes down to cultural differences. in many asian countries, we can call an older woman as "sister" (like onee-san in japan, unnie in korea, jiejie in china, chị in vietnam, etc.). since there's no direct translation of those words in english, and sister in english only refers to biological sister, it created many misunderstanding if you weren't familiar with the culture and language

    In my country, the Philippines, we call sister "Ate" but you can also call all woman older than you ate. It is not specifically use for a female sibling.
