Ah, yes. I went back and reread it, he was gone for two days. But we see it from his perspective so it does not look like a lot of time has passed bc he is out of it from drugs that the guy put in the drink he offered MC. Eventually the only reason he got away was bc he acted like the guy had accidentally overdosed him. And yes, neither his mom or grandma called him.
There is also a prior chap where they are doing a radio show and they were reading people's submissions and one of the group member's calls out the writer's parents to be abusive bc they were neglectful. He said physical abuse isn't the only form of abuse and MC kind of breaksdown crying bc it was the first time he realised what he got from his mom was a form of abuse. Then we see a throwback where his mom leaves him a card for food and he buys ramen. When she calls him, she says don't waste it, it is food expenses for three months. So I'd have to assume she left her middle school aged child alone at home for long stretches of time. And the group member also said in the radio show that if they were in the US the parents would be arrested which would also be true for MC's mom being highly neglectful and endangering a child when he got kidnapped.
