I wouldn't say so, but as a white person I'm not a perfect sensitivity reader.
I can't remember if any characters call the ML's nation "barbarians", but what we are shown is a developed society with complex politics and culture, and an ML who cares about his nation and people.
So, if they do it's the opinion of the character - not the author.
There's some brutality, and inter-sibling rivalry within the royal family, but nothing we haven't seen white ppl do in other comics.
Again, I'm not as keen at spotting racial stereotypes and subconscious bias as I would like to be, but I don't remember there being anything egregious.
They don’t call brown people barbarians but it’s still very orientalist. The very fact that “aslan” is just a mix of vague South Asian/middle eastern cultures is orientalist. The author has done no research to make it even resemble a real place (looking at the kind of food they ate was so funny ngl) but to be fair the same can be said about the vague European country mc is from. I will say it’s less sexualizing aspect of orientalism which is good at least.
In my previous reply, I forgot that they don’t exactly call them barbarians but they are described as more crass and violent.
Guys before i read this....is this story incredibly racist/orientalist and or calls the brown people barbarians?
