I find Taegun's love issue very real. Him going slow, "testing" things are -in my opinion- a very realistic trauma response. Very low self-esteem, highly self-conscious about every step that reminds him of his painful past : he's reminded of Kang every. single. time.. And as sad as it is, it's perfect.
