Fair take. Not every adaptation is gonna work for everyone and that’s absolutely valid. Tho I haven’t even watched the anime of this yet since I’m still marinating it until it’s complete hehe so I can’t really judge how it goes.
But damn I still think we’re living in some kind of golden era for wlw/gl/yuri/shoujo ai stuff lately. There’s just so much stuff now compared to before. So many canon yuri/shoujo ai manga getting animated and scheduled to air around this year. They may not all be How Do We Relationship typa thing yet especially when it comes to grounded adult romance but the variety we’re getting now is honestly insane af.
I still remember how so fckin thrilled I was when MagiRevo, WataOshi, WataYuri, and Hikikomari were announced to be adapted back in 2023 and that whole G Witch era? I genuinely thought I would die of happiness. It honestly felt like it gave birth to even more hype going into 2024 with stuff like Sasakoi and a handful of other fruity gems I won’t even start listing.
While hopefully this year we’re going to see action heavy yuri like OmaGoto, angsty Tai Airi Deshita, and the legendary green yuri adaptation. Even my personal faves like Kimishinu and Amayo no Tsuki finally getting their own adaptations still feels unreal. Not long ago this would’ve sounded like pure azz delusion fr.
And it’s not just anime either. We’re also seeing more wlw light novels getting adaptations plus way more official English translations lately. Same with wlw manga/manhwa/manhua getting licensed and translated more. That kind of accessibility used to be rare af but now it’s becoming more and more normal.
What really makes this feel huge though is remembering how little not just subtext yuri/shoujo ai stuff we used to get. Before so many series were labeled yuri/shoujo ai but ended up being just subtext, bait, fetishized sht, or tragic doomed fck. Fully committed adaptations with real visibility were rare af.
Now having Watanare and Watatabe finishing their run last year and receiving tons of good feedback and recognition is honestly a huge deal. That kind of response shows there’s clearly growing interest and genuine engagement. That stuff helps open these mf doors for more anime and manga studios to start adapting and serializing more wlw stories. As they should’ve done millenniums ago lol.
It’s also getting real beyond anime. The shift is noticeable. Ayaka is in Love being a wlw live adaptation from Japan still feels surreal since it’s not dancing around implications or subtext. The fact that it even got a season two is dayum peak honestly.
Then Friendly Rivalry gaining more attention coming from Korea. HELLO!? Korea and it’s not Handmaiden. That sht is huge. Tho the source leans heavily into subtext territory the visibility and reactions toward the adaptation have been wild af. It also getting a season two honestly feels like we’re winning fr. I still remember that one scene that permanently altered my brain chemistry.
If we zoom out even further Thailand’s GL series scene has been growing like crazy and experimenting with different themes, dynamics, and production quality. I’ve also noticed more wlw stuff emerging from China lately. Across multiple countries and mediums there’s clearly more stuff, more variety, more visibility.
With all these shifts happening it’s for sure a transition period. We’re moving from almost none or barely there toward an era where wlw stuff isn’t as limited anymore. The variety and visibility just keeps expanding sm. That’s why I see these adaptations as part of something bigger.
With how things are moving lately even Kamiina Botan received an adaptation so honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if How Do We Relationship eventually gets an anime one day.
And when that happens? Oh I’m DONE. We’ll probably be drowning in even more wlw stuff. I can’t wait for it to fckin happen hehe.

Is this the golden era for the gays especially wlw's!? It honestly feels like it. There are wlw shows, movies, and novels everywhere now, and on top of that, we’re getting a wave of live action and anime adaptations of manga and light novels. Including this smuttier ones that nobody ever expected to make it to the screen. The sheer amount of representation, stories, and visibility hitting the mainstream all at once feels surreal in the best way possible. OML, I’m literally ascending from pure happiness. PLEASE GO ON DO MORE.
