There is this thing called toxic empathy, where empathy is misplaced and you are giving it to the wrong person. In this case, Luke empathized more with Bruno while throwing his own boyfriend under the bus. I believe this is exactly the author's intention, hence why we have Luke reflecting on his own mistake in the newest chapter.
