Some aspects were lacking but wow. Compared to most of the other stories from this genre, both the queen and the mistress were given so much nuance. Honestly if we’re being real the true villains that started this chain of events were the men in their life. Yeah, the Queen’s actions went beyond the realm of justification but she was a victim as well. I like how they don’t blame the marchioness for her affair with the king, the detail that she was thrown onto the king’s bed at 16 was sickening like holy shit. Even Rosalyn’s circumstances mirror how the other women were used by the men around them, she was sold off after being worked like a dog for a family that doesn’t even recognize her as one of their own. The resolution of these conflicts felt different than the usual triumph over evil, it was bittersweet and even sad, esp taking into account how Robien essentially had to kill all of his remaining family members after he had grown up surrounded by their love. And finally I think the best written part of this story was the couple’s grief. The miscarriage wasn’t simply a narrative device to show how far gone and evil the queen is, it put a heavy strain on their relationship, and even after they made up, it was a grief that they would have to carry with them for the rest of their lives. It was so beautiful I cried bro
