i think if that very concept was the reason of the nation falling apart, then yes it was worth it to crush on. Ofc we can't overlook other possibilities such as neglect of duty n what not, but imo the author trying to show that this is the worst outcome of those "soul mate" concept in politics or could be the rational way of what could happen if it were in our timeline as now
