He hid his trauma, regrets, and even his burned hands, when in reality he just wanted someone to see him in his raw and vulnerable state. He was never pretending to be strong, he was simply afraid of being truly seen. When Youji told him that he did not need to force himself and should not feel guilty, it showed that he was not trying to change him but to accept him as he was. All Youji wanted was for Sawa to remember that he was not alone and that he was loved completely, even in his pain.
