It's a classic case of miscommunication and misunderstanding that has a relationship fall out. However, the duke just straight up treats her like a prize so when shes out of his grasp, he acts like a stalker and becomes acting mayor of a town shes living in. Like- the dude is gross. AND SHE'S SWAYED BY HIM- when he hasn't even apologized. Still treating her like shes his possession.
