Just tell your friend you know a person (now you know me ;) ) who calls people with other people's names very often and that you would never believe that one day the same thing may happen to you.
I know it is an unpleasant situation for you and I know it well.
I had that problem for years. It happened to my 10-years co-worker that I called her other first names instead of her first name many times, and not only her, bc I did that to my other colleagues too. Every time it happened I apologized and just explained to them that I have such problem and after some time they understood that I don't do it bc I disrespect them by not bothering to remember their names, but bc I am like this and I can't help it.

So I asked my friend a school-work qns a wk ago and she messaged me today to tell me the ans cuz she read up on it.
Then I was soooooooo touched and replied her "OMG THANKS SOOOO MUCH [name 1] YOU'RE SO NICE!!"
and then she went "Uhm- I'm [name 2]"
