You can feel the undertones of his crush on her in their earlier interactions like when Penelope is talking to other men like the Prince and Eckles he gets aggro (probably cause he's jealous) also the scene with the pink bird.
A majority of him acting like a bitch is because of how he acts because he doesn't realize he has a crush on her.
Yeah I recalled that a bit but I guess I never looked at it in that angle, bc he was so hateful I just assumed he was someone who wasn't able to get past not disliking her anymore and treating her normally
