I don’t know if it is that different (I’m not from the US so I’m not sure about the school system), I just goggled it and it stated that middle school is from ages 12-15 . They started talking in their last year of middle school meaning he was 15 (if I’m not wrong they also mentioned he and the ML were a year older than their peers so they could have been 16 but idk)
