So my caffinated brain overthinks that what if the people who were supposed to be mates were people who have eaten the herb that helps the dragon in their mating, because they have eaten, essentially they have absorb the properties of the plant into their bloodstream. As we have read that glunn's mate was in the north, so was the herb was found.
