From a fictional standpoint I am with you. I actually like that ML did internally change but without the author giving him a new personality, which would have felt unrealiatic.
But unfortunately from a realistic perspectiv the level of physical and mental abuse ML committed against the MC is so egregious that none of what he's done so far feels like it's addressing repeated instances of very violent rape and verbal abuse. Both which clearly contributed to Dan's relapse into Alcoholism in the first plac, which makes "saving his life" in that regard less a significant step towards redemption and more the least he could do for the person he literally bullied back into substance abuse.
And I even like ML and feel bad for him and his trauma. I'm enjoying myself reading this, but the complainers have a point. Nobody wants to go back to the start of the story but man, ripping his arms off and beating him with it does sound completely reasonable.

Exactly. The author can gloss it over with a sorry and buying presents. But he definitely didnt do a 180. Hes about 30% more in the right direction. He apologized what, twice? And just for how he treated dan with that match, and for throwing his bday present. He hasnt apologized for the general way hes treated him. And he needs more communication before he can fully be forgiven. Hes definitely getting better, but still not there fully.
