I agree, the ending was a bit horrible .
I also read it and by the way Satoko doesn't even look aged made me think he was simply hallucinating. Like the thing old people do when they think they saw someone they knew. I think it was just hopeful imagination from Shinpei because he's old and depressed.
I refuse to accept the 'rushed' ending because what does author mean she lived and did nothing to find him? I'm starting to think she didn't deserve his care when she was sick. Like, dude? All of that trials and tribulations for that?
Author should've just made it a sad ending, smh.
I would rather have a sad ending than whatever this is and it legit makes no sense. Cause as you said you are trying to tell me, that she was always living there and never even tried to find him and you are also trying to tell me that he never went to the house. I don't like this like at all.
I just read the last chapter on another site (just googled firefly marriage last chapter) and imo the ending is actually horrible.

She doesn’t die, but he thinks she did and grows old and only figures out she’s not dead after he’s an old man and revisits the house and she was there the whole time ._.
