I think its cuz japanese society tends to be really restrictive. Piercings, especially multiple ones, and dyed hair (like his coworkers) can get u labelled as a thug or like yakuza. The dragon back tattoo also is considered a sign of the yakuza (jap mafia) so i guess the rumors started from there

This does not really apply to the current generation of Japanese teens tho except in rural places. Japanese teens now are more accepting of alt culture, emo, or just any other fashion that’s different from “normal”. I find that they either treat it indifferently or looks at them ad just weird and different but not really scary like this story.

I'm assuming the author may be from an older gen, or may be writing the story as being from that gen where these things werent acceptable
