I just like imagining the servant know but tolerate it due to their pay. Richer households up through the Victorian era had separate hallways for staff so the family could pretend they weren't even there. Servants are also how rumors spread so fast.
So they are probably diverting guests in a covert manner. All is well.
It's probably because Richard's redheaded right man is standing guard in front the door for them and Richard knows he's there. They mention him at the end of chapter 84 and start of 85. Poor dude
