Even the most adept seasoned fighters can still get knocked on their feet by something as a flash bangs (stunned grenade) it's a grenade to fuck with your senses. So your sight hearing and orientation. It induces balance issues, can even induce seizures vomiting etc. the only person who could withstand a flash bang would be Helen Keller. You could say he should of realized they could use anything since all three of them were walking into enemy territory but that's literally trying to plan every scenario that could be done have a plan and then say it in a manner of seconds so all three of them would cover their ears and eyes. Cause it only takes a delayed 2 seconds for it to go off. But since this a world with magic it's even less then that. Cause it was probably a spell they shot off instead of a actual flash bang.
