Neutering divergent usually got different approaches on things, mainly the « if this doesn’t make sens logically, it shouldn’t emotionally either » from what I know (from this one person around me) they dissect things to understand it more, that’s how they deal with emotions. In this case, love is known as a brain chemical reaction, if a name is a guarantee you can fall in love then you don’t need to know who the other person is to make it work, he’s not doing this to gauge reactions, I think he just wants to understand why and how.
I agree with you that I find Dohu way more palatable than the one in this series, but that could also be because Between the Lines is written from Dohu's point of view, and we can clearly tell that Dohu has no malicious intention and is very slow at understanding his own feelings.
I think my concern is not whether the behavior can be considered manipulation or neuro-divergent. I simply can't tell if the ML actually like the MC or this is all done in the name of science. I hope that will be clearer in the second season.
I'm sure they will fall in love since this is romance. I guess my question is more exactly when that happens. Did he already have attraction from the start? Did it build gradually? Is he even in love right now? What part of the MC that he likes if at all? It is really hard to tell.
In contrast, I can roughly tell when Dohu developed his feelings. He already had his heart thumping from their very first movie date, or when Dohu defended Juheon from the bullies. So even if Dohu is unaware of his feelings, we the audience can infer from his actions. The ML of this series is a lot more vague in contrast. He certainly put a lot of effort for the MC, but we have no idea if that is born out of love or curiosity.
I don’t understand why you felt like I was excusing his behavior but I’ll just re explain my point. Imo he’s testing a theory to make sure this isn’t a case of « if I hope hard enough it’s gonna be destiny » he’s only trying to see if having someone’s name means being meant to be or so falling in love no matter the circumstances or if seing your name makes you feel obligated to fall in love. So for me some of his steps are understandable, hence why I don’t see testing this theory as manipulative. It’s still doesn’t erase everything else neither the lie nor how harassed the boy into showing himself buttnaked to check for his name.

Until they get it. Then they just call it manipulative
