That was my first thought as well!
I think it shows very beautifully (and very subtly, well done author!) that FL was right that he really has only superficial interest in her and no deeper feelings.
i think normally if you meet someone you are interested in ans you have to cancel last moment you would be less vague-like i think normally it would be like "something happened to my dog I can't meet you today" yk
