I mean yes Riftan is overprotective. But I don't think it's fair to assume that Maxi is capable of defending herself in this case just cause she can incinerate one goblin. The issue is that it's not just one goblin, and Maxi can only use magic less than a handful of times a day. Plus, given her nature, she's likely to prioritize others instead of herself. So when the whole monster army ends up breaking through the walls, she's going to use her magic to save others and not have any left to save herself. She's not incompetent or useless. But she doesn't take care of herself, and she doesn't have the power to protect others. If she stays behind just because of a sense of camaraderie, she's going to be one more person the knights have to try to protect. Which is going to put even more people in danger because a chunk of the knights that were left behind will prioritize keeping her safe rather than fighting or saving others. She's a burden. That being said, I don't like that they're lying to her. But I also don't like that Maxi doesn't care about herself and doesn't ever think about consequences.
And the princess is essentially a soldier. She has been trained as such, and she has experience with battles and wars. Maxi does not. So it's not fair to compare them. Maxi has barely even started her magic journey while the princes has years of experience.
