What was supposed to happen?

It was that only a mother carrying child, appearing to be injured, appeared before Susanna so she helped them into the house, but as she was trying to help with their injuries, the mother turned into a monster. This scared Susanna so she ran to hide, which lead her accidentally falling into the fireplace. Of course, the child also turned, hence the second but smaller monster that Cherry saw.

How did Susanna survived? What will happened in the next few chapters?

Though I don't remember how long she was in the fireplace, she survived thanks to a canteen of water that was left inside.
