I have a long referred to this song as: the stalkers anthem.% Somehow this creepy a$$ song placed number 1 on the Billboard hot 100 chart and stayed there for eight consecutive weeks. It is literally a song about how this dude is planning to creep on this woman. He will watch her constantly. With or without her consent. And somehow this is romantic.

True but also ppl really don't pay attention to lyrics/meaning. It's all about the rhythm and how it sounds for most ppl. I can't tell u how many songs are popular with disgusting lyrics (even though some of them are satire) it's like when songs that are critic religion gets put into religious playlists or when ppl like a song they think is patriotic but it's actually being entirely satire (I have a few example songs for everything I just talked about)
