Idk maybe part of the reason this “flopped” is because it has a niche audience. It doesn’t map cleanly to typical male audience who want power rush, epic battle fights and cute girls. It has epic gorey battle fights but the op and fanservice is weak this time around.
It doesn’t really fit perfectly to typical female audience who want focus on intimacy and bromance. It is very queer coded but also not that fanservicey even for female audience. The clothing and handsome cast sure but their interactions are not that “cute”. Idk how to describe.
It’s like it has both parts mixed so niche audience. It’s not like males don’t want to read bromance and handsome male cast, see sports anime. And no need to mention how a lot of females read shonen manga.
Ofc regardless of gender there are people who like each, even the author is female.
If it fits the audience taste enough usually it’s okay if the story is janky here and there. See all the generic op isekai that get animated.
Another reason is probably this comic is too thick on themes and worldviews only niche audience or minorities would resonate with. Most people want something that feels good than sit with cruel reality of war and survival.
But this is this author’s unique strength, their worldview is down to earth and focused on morality. Given this still got animated it means that it was popular somewhat? Or because Magi author? Idk it seems like barely anyone talks about it
