Personally idc if they change genders, but in this case ml already wanted him. It's the mc who doesn't believe him, it's more of a miscommunication and self esteem issue than a conformity one

ML has already loved MC even during their long “relationship.” It’s just his trauma with betas that holds him back. It’s like imagine getting sexually abused/harassed by a man and having a disgust for men after that, then being in denial for falling for a man even all you’ve been through.

These are just my thoughts based on that info of ML’s trauma. I assume he’s fine with skinship with MC overall simply because it’s MC he loves, it can only be MC. But when it comes to sex with a beta, it may trigger that memory he had when his dad tied him to a chair as a kid and forced him to watch him have sex with a beta. The act of sex with a beta in general may trigger and make him disgusted remembering that.
It’s sad that the mc has to turn into an omega for the ml to romantically want him. If you put it into a different perspective, it’s like saying the mc has to conform to society’s standards just to seem desirable to the ml
