I’m frustrated when I see this trope in any form of media, literature, graphic novel, comic. It’s everywhere. And while I’m all for creative liberties, I fear it’s damaging to the younger public.
I was young once, I used to think age gaps were romantic. Now im an adult and I can tell you right here and now,
No Adult Should Find A Teen Attractive. None.
If you hear “you’re so mature for your age”, then be on alert. This is an adult who has not only confirmed that they know you are young (by saying “for your age”) but that has also rationalized in their heads that you act older and are therefore OLDER.
As in they think “their age doesn’t matter because they act like an adult”. Which could lead to dangerous behaviors.
THIS IS NOT OK.
Ask yourself “why is this adult interested in a high schooler?” “Why doesn’t this adult hang out with other people their age”. “What do they gain from being with me”.
Ima be so for real with you right now.
The only reason an adult will date a younger person is because it makes them feel special and appreciated. Changes are the younger person thinks everything they do is cool when all they’re doing is the bare minimum for an adult. A car, money, jobs, apartment, all that shit is common and no one their age will congratulate them. But a teen thinks they’re amazing and it’s validating.
They are NOT cool. They are lame and pathetic. And YOU deserve better!!
Your older siblings friend should NOT go looking for you alone. Your teacher should NOT compliment your body. Adults should NEVER feel butterflies when seeing teens.
Do nOT feel bad for them. It is not the responsibility of a teenager to make an Adult happy.
These tropes should remain fiction and not be romanticized.
