From what I gathered from the novel. He discovered too late what Yvonne was. That was after killing Penelope. He felt guilty for helping Yvonne and so he cast a forbidden spell to manipulate time. The price for that spell was to spend an eternity inside that magic circle.

This is not a spoiler because they explained this before, he was the first to be brainwashed by Yvonne in the base game/reality as he was the one that was supposed to bring her back to the manor, obviously our penny thwarts this by befriending him first. But the long haired vintner the one from the first reality put time on a loop until Yvonne could be stopped once he realized what was happening. So that’s why Yvonne is forced to do this brainwashing thing over and over and it’s only different now because of penny or more specially our specific mc that was isekaid into penny because she’s the GOAT
