It's understandable for his character. As a person who have been through a lot and still being taken advantage of by many people around him, this is his way to act tough. He doesn't easily trust people especially the ones who are related to his enemy. But you can actually see him being sweet and childish in front of people who actually care for him. Also remember that he is still young. He's just a kid. So young to experience this horrible life instead of attending school and living a normal life with a loving family.
