I remember reading it to my cousin when they were younger, and they would cry themself to bed for a while. It's a really touching series, I wish the author made more for the series. The movies are pretty good too, the first one is more original material based as well if you're curious
Oh my god the movie literally made me cried, it was so good too T-T
From my memory, it seems to be based on a book from the Omae Umasou Da Na series, a Japanese story book series of a T-Rex like dinosaur who becomes the father figure of two (or more) hatchlings. It seems to be based on the first book, as the father figure tries to eat a new born who imprints on him, leading to the father figure to teach the child how to survive, and eventually leaving the child. If anyone is interested, the series have 3 movie adaptations, all wonderfully made and I love very much. If someone reads or watches it, please let me know how it was for you
