Could have done way more with the drug addiction, random illness his parents had, his delusions, etc. I thought for a min that he was also falling ill and that would bring them closer together by finding a potential cure that tied in with the drugs being linked to the illness and the weird doctor knowing more than he let on. Or that the mc WAS actually hallucinating his parents and even the entire red mansion. What was even the point of the twins or the quack doctor? Would have been the exact same story and conclusion without them.
