Yap alert I just got excited: a lot of what kirino says seems like theyre dealing with gender dysphoria. Mishima I'm not so sure about. I would guess they're gender fluid because it seems like theyre okay with being a man sometimes and other times wish they were a woman. I think that's part of the reason (outside of external differences in acceptance) kirino decided to kill that part of herself, the change she needed to do was much more than Mishima. Kirino never went to "shangri-la" in thailand which a lot of trans women escape to from less accepting countries because thailand has a large and loud community there and she never physically transitioned outside of using the lipstick. For a lot of trans people puberty can force the idea onto them that they'll never be able to truly look how they feel on the inside. You see this with kirinos comments about her own body and jealousy of mishimas body. Of course this is all my interpretation and readers are allowed to interpret media differently I just saw enough signs that I think kirino was meant to be a girl. I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS BOOK OMG

looooved this. perfect read for anyone who enjoyed blue flag, huge CW for CSA. i also really admired the minutiae of how gender relates to sexuality, but god this is one of the saddest deaths of a woman in manga. kirino im so sorry, it will never be too late for shangri-la, i promise
