I'm not gonna defend Matthias but saying he raped Leyla is a bit much. From my understanding of reading the novel, he manipulated a situation for his outcome but he did give Leyla the option of refusing which would result in her uncle going to jail. It wasn't a fair trade but Leyla could have refused and Matthias would never force her physically. Through her fear of abandoned, she accepted the offer because she didn't want her uncle to go to jail and Leyla should have known her uncle would never want his freedom by her giving herself to Matthias and we see this when the found out about their relationship later. Matthias utilized a situation for his own benefit but he did give Leyla the option of refusing or accept, she chose to accept despite knowing what she would be required to do. If she had chosen to reject it, the worse outcome would be her uncle going to jail and knowing Matthias' character, he would have used another way to get Leyla, the accident with his grandmother just gave him a faster way to get Leyla. And even while being intimate, Leyla never rejected the act, she just tried to defy him.
The art is soo beautiful that my heart cries for the upcoming horrors....those scenes shouldn't be depicted with such glamorous artstyle....
