Thank you! It’s plain cognitive dissonance: people think the story is problematic but also enjoy the art/find the scenes attractive and so they try to justify or write off the story instead of just reading it as it is.
I don’t understand sitting through a story that is very clearly dark (like the author isn’t even slightly subtle) and still complaining and trying to make excuses for it.
