I do understand the hesitation part, him waiting for the "right moment" but that is just his fears stopping him from making the move cuz he had a bad experience, but this dude (ml) did the 180 from a homophobic jerk to someone who came out to his parents and also wouldn't flinch at being outed by that ex and all the things he did for the mc and their relationship in between.
