So for me, I'm reading cuz when I heard the BJ Alex author made ANOTHER scummy ML x weak MC story, I said "why tf not I guess".
Just like BJ Alex, I don't love it. I follow it like I'm following a really shitty soap opera: just never taking it seriously, laughing at how ridiculous it all is, waiting for the lazy redemption arc and "happy" ending. It's classic drama, and honestly I've seen worse than Jinx.
Also once the author makes the relationship mutual, the smut they make can be pretty hot. Not often I see a top squirt.

I love the art style but could wipe my ass with the story. That's enough to have kept me hooked since the very beginning - despite the less than riveting plot

I think readers were attracted initially because of the creator’s prev hit story and also the sensational art + smut—this alone can usually excuse weak plots and retain viewers. There is also a formula for engagement which is some form of injustice or pitiable circumstance that compels readers to root strongly for the MC or their cause. If this hook is strong enough it can justify people’s weekly reading of crap so that one day they may experience the catharsis of a sweet end to the characters sorrows. This ofc is a delusion because no ending would excuse all of the VILE shit that goes on but here we are. (=・ω・=)
I really love the slow burn and the character development. The actions are good too even if they're a bit too short. Also, I just like cinderella storys. Another point from the author too!(▰˘◡˘▰)
