The luck is basically tied to Taeui being alive which keeps Jaeui safe in impossible situations. Like when Ilay tries to shoot Jaeui when they first meet but the gun magically malfunctions. Sorry if I don't make sense

as long as taeui is alive, no matter how ridiculous the circumstance is, jaeui will somehow survive anyway? but if taeui dies, jaeui will immediately die as well? whereas taeui's survival isn't tied to jaeui, so even if jaeui dies, taeui wont be affected?
what i want to know is, is taeui considerably more unlucky compared to normal people because of this?
Yes Jaeui will only survive as long as Taeui does, but if Jaeui somehow dies first, Taeui will still live on. It's hinted that Taeui doesn't have good luck since he meets so many crazy characters (ilay and xinlu, then rahman, chris, and richard) but he still seems to have some protection since he survives them lol

Taeui brings Jaeui luck by literally keeping him alive. That's why when they were kids, if Taeui got sick, so would Jaeui. So that's what Jaeui means when he says that if Taeui ever dies, he will too. I could be mistaken since it's been a while since I read the novel, but Jaeui is actually very sick and it's the gilsangcheon that's holding him together.
