Jeez, I feel so sorry for this guy. The fact of the matter is that he is trying to be a good parent to his child, and he likely had nothing to base it off of, hence why he thought initially that his role as a father was to provide for his family and ensure that they don't live the life that he did.
Additionally, the trauma of seeing your wife dead on the ground while also struck with the realisation that you could have prevented her death must have left him with resounding trauma.
The overstimulation was articulated well, in my opinion. Showing that he wasn't trying to be harsh on his child, but was instead trying to guide him, while not in the most calm manner, it is to be expected in a situation where you feel as if the room is closing in around you.
His son was also not behaving "bratty," but instead articulating his feelings as all children should be able to do when they feel safe with their parent, which leads me to believe that the Mc was not in this state of panic where he tries to correct the child with a tad too much force constantly, hence why the child felt safe enough to express his wants around him. While it could be argued that the child did not articulate some things, I.e. his need to go to the bathroom or when he withheld that he was being picked on, it was essentially done in the best interests for his father, showing that the child, did, perhaps deep down, understand that he was attempting to protect his father, I'll be that it is not the role of a child, but many do not understand how co-dependent single parenthood becomes when you can only depend on eachother.
The ML was far too immature for a relationship where he would take up a parental figureship. He lacked the ability to be straight forward, which helps children understand what the adult means, and was often apprehensive when it came to both the Mc and his child, as seen in both the asparagus and grandma introduction scenes. The argument may be made that he was trying his best and that he did infact help when needed, but the fact still remains that he was inconsistent, and inconsistency breeds grounds for miscommunication and doubt in both the relationship, and the betterment of the child. The child will most likely see this apprehension as untrustworthy and this will foster a relationship in which the child will feel unable to approach the parental figurehead with doubts and problems. And I believe that the ML is not suited for a relationship in which he holds the responsibility of parent.
Nevertheless, the relationship created between the ML and MC is to the betterment of the latter, as the co dependency between child and parent would likely lead to lasting issues in the child, and this breakage of such a situation will hopefully help not only the ML in his maturity, but also assist in the MC being able to take on less solo tasks that may lead to actions he may regret.
I would like to restate the point that the apprehension presented but the ML makes for an unstable environment for the child and the MC, as he likely suffers from a latent or prevalent form of OCD and Panic disorder caused by either his childhood or the trauma of losing his wife, and I would have liked to see this addressed in the manga. To that point I am left with a feeling of dissatisfaction that the MLs growth in straying form apprehension was not explored, as I feel it would have been a turning point in the right direction in building a stable environment for the child that sustains growth.
