Makes sense that they're holding on to the calamities like that. It's like a natural deterrent for other countries so that they don't invade in the name of getting resources in this fractured world. Though it isn't as powerful as a nuke, it sure is deadly and more dangerous as it actively seeks to destroy the living. They can probably even use it as a source of energy but it doesn't seem like they taught of that and instead they now see it as a weapon.
