He can absolutely have both. Bipolar and a dissociative disorder (I made a comment about how I think he has OSDD-1a, not DID). I see someone made the comment that he “only has two personalities” which is the bare minimum for a dissociative disorder. And this plays into why I think Hosu has OSDD-1a, not DID.

However, there is one very important point that differentiates this from being Bipolar. His mood swings aren’t long lasting. They can last days, weeks, years, but they can also last for just a couple hours. In Bipolar, mood changes typically happen without a trigger, and will usually happen gradually. These mood swings are a minimum of days long (Bipolar is often confused with BPD in this regard, Bipolar has long lasting mood swings, BPD has instant swings based on triggers). Mania isn’t a sudden switch, it progressively gets worse before it drops into the depressive state. Whereas with a dissociative disorder such as OSDD-1a or DID, switches typically happen near instantly unless the system is experiencing a particularly difficult switch (in which case, they may dissociate for a hot minute). Switches can happen rapidly within seconds, minutes, or hours. “Normally” within hours, days, or maybe weeks. And sometimes even months or years. How long a part stays in front heavily depends on the situation, the system, and the part themself.
In fact: OSDD/DID is often misdiagnosed as Bipolar for your exact reasoning! And OSDD can be especially misdiagnosed due to the lack of amnesia in OSDD-1b systems. For a system, they’re extremely likely to first be diagnosed with Bipolar, since the symptoms are quite similar! Bipolar can resemble a lot of dissociative disorders, like OSDD/DID, C-PTSD, or DpDr.
This was my original thought! In my post that I linked, i talked about why I decided on OSDD-1a instead of 1b. Here:
“
Unless the second Hosu has his own name and identity—which almost sounds likely with how Hosu talks about him. Referring to him as “that guy”—I’ll be going with the OSDD-1a route. Both known alters are versions of Hosu (that we can tell), and they have had instances where they “forgot”. Though at the end it said he lacked memory loss, just earlier it said there were moments Hosu would forget what happened.
”
The tricky part is that we don’t know for sure if the more unstable Hosu is just another version of Hosu (which is still an alter in OSDD-1a systems) or if these two alters really don’t have any anmesia, since Moran has said Hosu would “act like he forgot”, not explicitly stating he always remembers. Until we get a clearer understanding of both Hosu’s and if the other isn’t also Hosu, or if he ever experiences full amnesia or not, its hard to draw an absolute conclusion on which OSDD diagnosis he’d get. In a real clinical setting, he’d likely get diagnosed with UDD (unspecified dissociative disorder) until these questions had answers. Maybe he really does have DID and we just haven’t seen both symptoms manifest entirely yet!
I’m excited to see where it goes. I quite enjoy nitpicking and psychoanalyzing characters and their disorders, canon or otherwise lol. Psychology is a huge special interest of mine.

A lot of Hu-so’s behaviours look like symptoms of mania rather than DID.
-Elevated mood (bubbly mode)
-Increased risky behaviour (inviting a stranger to live at his house, and offering his credit card)
-Impulsive behaviour (suggesting to drop out of school)
-Rapid-fire communication (his flood of texting/calls)
-Increased energy (his stamina…)
-Hypersexualty
-High irritability (current mode)
-Mixed states, where feelings of intense stress can manifest as anxiety or panic
