Acheron may not be the main villain. Ariel was still a baby when it started so he may have been acting like he wants to stay on the throne to protect her. This gives Ariel time to be stronger. Kuolons were killed but there was one that remained. Gods were not killed just had their powers sealed.
Feels like delaying tactics.
