That means he is rich enough to not bother doing anything thats easy anyway. Like, he's so rich he buys apples instead of picking the ones right in front of him
Where i come from for example we have a saying like "he's rich enough to buy pine cones" not because they are expensive, but because they symbolize something that lays right in front of you, but you can't be bothered to pick it up, even if the one on the ground is just as beautiful and for free
