It's an alternative story, where he never broke up with his ex and continues there. That was really a part, I would never read. His suffering ended, the moment he broke up with the ex.

The real ending is at chapter 7. Don't read the alternative storyline, if you want to make sense of the main story.
I don't know how people can like it. I'm disgusted beyond believe and nearly throwing up, even thinking about something between them, after reading the main story from 5 years before. I even skipped the flashback of the childhood, because I couldn't stand the ashole.
But so glad the main couple have their happy ending.
