nursing or biochem

Jia March 28, 2026 6:39 pm

hey all... im about to decide where im going for college and what im majoring in. i got accepted into a direct nursing program (bsn) and another school for biochem. both are equally ranked (taking into consideration resources, cost of attendance, location, social life, etc.), so really the only difference would be career outcomes

do any of ygs know anything about either? if yes...please share --- especially for biochem

really random but u know, people from everywhere r scrolling on mangago

This is really random lol. Finding a job with a biochem degree is really hard (according to my peers and research) unless you live in a biochem hub while getting a nursing degree gives you a lot of opportunities since they're on demand especially in my country but a lot of my nursing student and already working friends are... I hate to say this but really tired

Hiii I’m currently a nursing student, and I also had the same dilemma, but I weighed the options since nursing had way more flexibility in the job market I’m working my way to become a CRNA since they have a better income. Although, its just my opinion that nursing is the way to go because it suited my lifestyle (i unexpectedly have enough time for a life outside of college). In biochem its a great opportunity, you’ll be in a lab most of the time though. But I guess it depends on your lifestyle how you would want to go through it

I feel like this may be different for different countries (bc diff job markets). From what I can gather from the replies so far, Nursing seems more lucrative compared to Biochem. However. it's the inverse in my country, Here, I would advise you biochem. So, I think knowing what country you're from and asking those people specially, would be better and more accurate

Hi, I have friends who majored in both biochem and nursing as a med student myself. From what I can see, people usually take biochem as their pre-med, as it covers a lot of med school prerequisites. It's one of the popular ones to take honestly. Especially if ur going into pharmacy. But yes, it is harder to find a job other than the usual entry-lab positions unless you want to go to grad school/med school. It does also depend on the country ur in ofc.

On the other hand, nursing is a specific career (biochem leans on laboratory/research focused). And it's very on demand if I'm not mistaken, in most countries. You can also do specializations, you have certain options down the road. But yeah, my nursing friends barely have time to rest and that's just reality for most nurses unfortunately. In my country, they're tired, (most likely sleep deprived) and shockingly underpaid...

I hope you manage to choose what u want, I know it's a big choice to do but don't worry and overthink too much. I believe, in the end, everything will work out. (Take it from me, who's graduating this year!) Best of luck to you!

I'll definitely take that into consideration! I'm in America...so both career paths are entirely dependent on the current administration's funding cuts to healthcare...

I see! I'll probably have to do more research into how labs are since that seems to be the predominant environment biochem majors are in... I assume nursing is a more engaging day to day (and I think I'll get to see that during clinicals)

ohhh I see :(, both premed and a career in nursing sound quite exhaustive (as is anything in the Healthcare field). I definitely have to think over the medschool/premed path since its a very demanding commitment. I wish they would bring back debt forgiveness for medical school in 'murrica...
