The biggest problem is that he has put Maxi in a pedestal. Yes, he wants to protect her but he doesn't communicate with her, leading to all these misunderstandings.
But he couldn't protect her from this. He wanted to grieve alone and shoulder that burden but it didn't stay private. Everyone who was there on the field sees her rightfully as a hero. What pissed me off most about this plot point before the manwha before we even got here was that all the nobles act as if it means she can have children and is defective. She literally caused a landslide to save lives and the price took an enormous toll on her body that aborted a pregnancy she didn't know she had. That's entirely different from a noble lady who isn't allowed to do even half that physical activity having a miscarriage. It's like they think a cancer warning means 100% chance of getting cancer.
Like, let the rumors circulate. Try to bring down my accomplishment and see if I do anything to save your *sses when the devil comes knocking. This is what Maxi's drive to not be a burden should be. Instead, the people who matter the most to her kept this part away from her, sent her away from them, and put her back into the hands of someone who squashed her dreams and beat her; Riftan doesn't know that (yet) but did he really expect her father or his staff not to tell her? If he was actually the concerned parent he pretended to be, he would have accidentally let the cat out of the bag trying to comfort her.
That's why we're all pissed. We don't hate him for doing what he thinks is protecting Maxi moreso than his lack of communication overall. He makes decisions for her, not with her. No doubt he loves her but when it matters most, he clams up. She tries to gain some confidence in what little strength she has and she had to fight him for it.
I get the big reasons why he's like this but I can't remember if the manwha covered it already since they were extra chapters in the book. Doesn't negate the need to communicate. Just explains.
Exactly! Arguably, Riftan doesn't see Maxi as someone with her own agency and as a person. Some may argue this is the case in the time setting of this Manhwa. But since that is the case why do we treat him like he's a greenflag then? Riftan literally had Ruth make illusions of Maxi for him to get him self addicted to, to a point that he's ovsessed with her in the worst way possible. He loves her but he treats her like a Doll. May sound cruel to say this but just look at how he behaves with her throughout the entire story. And like you said he has put her on a Pedestal. When she acts out of character from the illusion he has in her head thats whats frustrates him. We can agree to disagree on that point. At the end of the day Riftan is not a good Husband. I keep having to mention this. But you'll notice at least from the Manhwa( I haven't read the novel ) that Maxi is always the one who initiates communication. She's always the one to try her best to speak up and give him her 2 cents. But he shuts her down nore often than not. And it just goes to show

Small correction: Ruth wasn't made to make illusions of Maxi for him to get addicted to. The spell he used was to strengthen happy memories to alleviate both physical and mental pain. He warned Riftan he couldn't do it too much because it caused addiction. However, Riftan only had two positive memories and they both had Maxi (though she doesn't remember.) So by the time Ruth was refusing to do so, Riftan was already passed the point he should have been.
Most people have quite a few happy memories to cycle through but Riftan did not, which is why he gained fame so quickly because he threw himself at enemies with nothing to lose. It is also why Maxi is the only woman he can be with, as his trauma made other women feel unappealing even before the spell addiction happened. So like we were talking in the other thread, it is total BS he won't wait for her. He absolutely will for as long as it takes. He only said that and refused to look at the boat's departure until it was too far out to hurt her.
The relationship is only open on Maxi's side. This is why I think it is a good thing for them to be separated for a while later. She was already fighting for her independence and her voice so she can fully develop those skills and return to talk some sense into him. After all, he won't divorce her, especially because that would mean she would return to her father.

now im mad at riftan cus he knew she had a misscarriage, and all he did is yell and push her away... really worried about maxi, that's the worst way she could find out about it
