binged this in two ish nights so now imma get WOKE.
what are we doing putting shiki's eight year old sister in a tube top, some short-shorts, and a choker? i get that the contrast between her present sense of style vs what she wore during confinement illustrates her new independence and comfortability with her self-expression, but why couldnt it be done in a way that's APPROPRIATE for an ELEMENTARY SCHOOLER to wear? and why does she suddenly throw herself onto kabane (13 y/o) thereafter and - regardless if it's a brief joke - the author seems to treat her as a love interest rivaling that of KON? (14 y/o - who'd i consider an ACTUALLY age appropriate interest for kanabe). sure she's pretty much sidelined until the cast needs a good healer every now and then, but hello the hell was that official art with her in a slit dress being smug at kon as the two stand by kabane's sides... get these kids out of my face rn. all this to say: her writing gives teen rebel and she's not even a PRE teen. let kids be kids japan. be serious
anyway that was my first red flag. then here goes iyohime's mom who deadass looks like a CHILDDDD. when i see her drawn next to her literal husband i cry. her mom's abilities should have no actual baring on her age (physical or otherwise) the same way her dad does so that's no excuse. realistically they should be about the same age as zenkichi's parents (whom they went to school with), who physically look like completely normal adults that i can actually see having a 16 year old child. so wtf was this design catered towards yeah say it with me PEDOPHILES lol
also dont get me started on the crazy sexual assault backstories on these characters that seemingly have no psychological repercussions - yui was a close exception. id honestly expect him or akagi to be scared of or repulsed by women in SOME way seeing as the yuki-onna of their village were their only exposure to the opposite sex for a majority of their lives... and needless to say they were traumatizing. and honestly shiki's mother is just hardly her own person and has too little scenes to showcase how years of rape and multiple pregnancies have taken some toll to her psyche. dunno if it's bc this is a shounen that they shy away from treating adult topics with traumatic consequences but damn the writing couldve been more compelling. not even gonna touch whatever the hell was gonna go down with kon and sakura im tired
