There is just sm emotional connection and miscommunication between the mcs as well as their sort of kind of falling out when they were younger that makes this toxic for both of them. But at the same time what hurts when reading is knowing that it DOESN'T have to be that way if they just talked it out and both stopped being so oblivious or concealing their true feelings ik that will probably happen at some point but I really do think in this case the depth of their relationship and the fact that there is healthy love here that hasn't been able to develop is the main selling point.
