I feel like the author finished this and then had mad regret afterwards. They were like WHAT HAVE I DONE!
However, it was too late to take it back. So, to salvage the situation, they came up with the alternative "what if" side story.
That's my theory. I have no other way to explain how come this terrifying fever dream suddenly became so enjoyable chapter 40 onwards.
