I already marked this as a spoiler, so if you continue reading despite the warning, that's on you.
To the novel readers (or just those who don't care about spoilers), PLEASE, I DESPERATELY NEED RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SIMILAR MANHWAS LIKE THIS ONE EXCEPT ITS ACTUALLY WORTH INVESTING IN!
After seeing this past update, I had to torture myself further by revisiting the novel, and after realizing that the banquet scene from Book 2 was basically just revenge sex, I've been desperately fighting the urge to go bat-shit insane with rage because of this damn story. Since their reunion in Book 2 and onward, Riftan essentially punishes Maxi for something that wasn't even her goddamn fault. For 80+ chapters, Riftan ignores her, avoids her, emotionally stonewalls and gaslights her, until eventually he has his way with her for an entire week—during which he SAs her repeatedly despite her protests, discomfort, distress and tears. He punishes Maxi over a decision she made in order to *protect him,* and still all he was able to think about was how her 3-year absence affected *him,* not ONCE ever considering how much the decision devastated Maxi as well. She fucking missed him dearly, yet the moment she returned, he kept her at arm's length and made her feel unwanted and abandoned, what the FUCK is wrong with him??
I said this in another comment thread, but I'll say it again here: This is exactly why this story has been such a disappointment for me and why I despise Riftan so much. So far, all his actions have done is reinforce Maxi's insecurities, doubt her capabilities, regress her self-esteem, insult her autonomy, and sabotage all of her attempts at self-improvement. Meanwhile, Riftan would repeatedly claim her body after every heated argument that was perpetuated by his utter lack of maturity and refusal to communicate and compromise. He does literally the bare minimum of character growth by the final volume of the novel, but it comes far too late into Maxi's journey, and by that point, he's already hurt her so many times that his "growth" basically feels meaningless. We don't get a cathartic apology scene after reading through 80+ chapters of emotional avoidance towards Maxi just because she made the choice to leave him for 3 years as a means to protect his ungrateful ass. Instead, we get a disgustingly drawn out, dub-con sex scene that lasts for several chapters, and then we see him pathetically beg Maxi not to leave him again because the author thought that him groveling to his wife was an effective substitute over him taking *full* accountability for the inconsiderate, domineering, and obsessive behavior he's demonstrated throughout the majority of the story. Even when he admits to what he's done, he never truly accepts responsibility for it or offers Maxi a sincere apology, so moments that * do* seem to convey character development completely fall apart. Plus, even if Riftan *were* to accept responsibility, Maxi would ultimately spoil any attempt by faulting *herself* for his emotional instability, saying that she simply didn't love or trust him enough, which is what caused him to act out at all or some horseshit—as if his broken pride, bruised ego and emotional immaturity are hers to manage.
God. Maxi, as an individual as well as her character arc, has been a treat to read through, but her relationship with Riftan exponentially tanks the journey of her character growth.
If anyone can recommend me a series with a similar setup—I mean it could be any genre really, but preferably I'd like another fantasy-adventure romance manhwa between a similar FL like Maxi with a ML that's not insufferable and actually has a decent, existing character arc. I need to wash out the muck that was the dub-con smut from this god-awful series. (Fair warning: Don't recommend It Was Just a Contractual Marriage. That story's been so dry, boring, and the ML already gives me the ick so far.)
Behind The Laughter Of The Surviving Princess, My Dear Oppressor( this one is the most similar I could find 10/10 though) and When the Count's Illegitimate Daughter Gets Married.

Thank you for this recommendations! I just have to read something new to forget my frustration with this series!
You saying this is a fucked up story???? Why did it end up like that???? Tharsh
Probably because it's going on for too long already. At the beginning was a vision and maybe a great story planned with chara development and a safe happy ending for Maxi. Now it's a disappointment and a waste of time. I'm mad just remembering my hopes and thoughts I wasted on that sheet.
