From what I suspect based on how predictable these things are but also the authors past work, the father probably did like the mc and attempted to do something however the mc was resisting and denying the father, and who knows maybe the wife/mls family worn down the mc constantky making him feel less than just because they belived him tk be their dads "side chick" so he thought of accepting the father's love just for a moment so he doesnt have to keep denying but remembered his love for ml or maybe he just couldn't do it and didn't go through with it, somewhere in the middle of that is where the ml walked in on them and it spiraled from there. That's just my speculation could be 100% wrong

I expect something along these lines because it would make sense, especially with the father apologizing in his will video.
